THE AQUA FOLLIES PRESENTED BY
LAGUNA WOODS AQUADETTES
Come dance with the Aquadettes and The Nomads on March 31! (No, not in the pool!). This is a fund raiser to support the annual 2022 Aquafollies to be held in Sepember. The Aquadettes-Nomads Dance will be held at Club House One on March 31, 2022, 6:00-9:00p.m. and will feature dancing, a no-host bar, appetizers, raffle and silent auction. You can show your support by purchasing a ticket ($12 early bird on-line or $15 at the door). Additionally, consider making a tax deductible contribution to this 56 year old tradition in Laguna Woods Village, to the Village Community Fund at: villagecommunityfund.org/Aquadettes
The 2022 Aqua Follies will feature up to eight synchronized swimming routines set to Disney music including, When You Wish Upon A Star, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. The show will conclude with the ever-popular and patriotic, God Bless America.
In 1965, the Aquadettes began as a group of all-female lifeguards who collaborated to host a synchronized swimming show and formally became a club one or two years later. Today, the Aquadettes practice twice a week (Mondays and Fridays 11 a.m. to noon) at Club House One. They will add an additional practice in May to gear up for their September performance.
The club has 15 members, with more than half who practice and will perform this September. Under the current leadership of club president, Kim Knotts, the Aquadettes are currently seeking new swimmers to join the group. “No prior swimming experience is necessary to join,” mentioned Knotts. “You just need to love the water and want to get active and stimulate your mind, body and memory.”
The women, ranging in age from 62-90, have been featured in National Geographic and other publications. They currently appear in the opening of the CBS hit comedy, “B Positive”. Now in its second season, the show airs Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. In 2020 they appeared on “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” on Disney+. Later this year, they will be featured in “The World Renown Aquadettes”, a documentary by Taryn Hooghly, a writer, director and producer of “The Last Doll Lady”, a 2017 documentary about Village resident Selma Bukstein.
It’s not too late to be part of this year’s performance. For more information about the Aquadettes, Kim at 949-632-4722 or Bunny at 949-290-6769. The water is pleasantly warm!
